Where the Binary Comes From

The STEM vs Arts binary has been amplified by economic anxiety. As manufacturing jobs disappeared and tech jobs proliferated, the argument became: science and technology pay; humanities don't. This narrative has some truth, STEM graduates on average earn more in their first job than humanities graduates. But average salary at first employment is a terrible measure of lifetime value, career fulfilment, or societal contribution.

And the argument ignores the evidence that the most innovative organisations consistently combine technical capability with communication, design, critical thinking, and cultural understanding, skills that arts and humanities education develops explicitly..

What STEM Needs That Arts Provides

The most in-demand professionals in tech are not pure engineers. They are engineers who can communicate their work to non-technical audiences. UX designers who combine coding ability with empathy and psychology. Data scientists who can tell a story with numbers, not just run an analysis. Product managers who understand both technical and human sides of what they're building. Apple and Pixar explicitly credit their artistic sensibility, their attention to design, narrative, and user experience, as central to their success.

What Arts Graduates Need That STEM Provides

The reverse is equally true. A literature graduate who understands basic statistics, who can work with data, who has some familiarity with how digital tools work, is significantly more employable than one who doesn't. The most valuable communicators, journalists, and policy analysts of the coming decades will be those who can move fluently between the quantitative and the qualitative, who are not intimidated by data and not dismissive of story.

The goal should not be to choose between STEM and Arts but to build genuine competence in both, and to resist premature specialisation..

It should be to build a portfolio of subjects that develops transferable skills, keeps options open, and includes at least some of what your child is genuinely passionate about.
